Frequently Asked Questions
Find clear answers about flooring systems, preparation, warranties, maintenance, timelines, and what to expect before you choose a contractor.

Getting Started
What do I do with my stuff?
We provide complimentary white-glove moving service for larger items at no additional cost. We simply ask that small items be boxed up and shelves be cleared before installation to help keep the project moving efficiently.
How long is the installation process?
Most residential floors are completed in 2–3 days, depending on the size of the space, the condition of the concrete, the repairs needed, and the system selected.
How long does it last?
Our systems are built for long-term performance and are designed to last for many years. Our premium systems include an in-house lifetime warranty, with additional warranty tiers available depending on the application.
Do you install both residential and commercial floors?
Yes. We install flooring systems for both residential and commercial spaces throughout Southeast Michigan.
Why choose Primal Coatings?
Because long-term performance comes from proper preparation, moisture protection, and the right system build. We focus on engineered installations using premium materials, in-house trained crews, and one of the strongest warranty offerings available.
Process & Preparation
What is moisture vapor, and why does it matter?
Moisture vapor moves upward through concrete and is one of the leading causes of coating failure. If it is not addressed properly, it can lead to peeling, bubbling, blistering, or delamination over time. That is why moisture mitigation is such an important part of a long-lasting floor.
What’s the deal with Polyurea/Polyaspartic?
Polyurea and polyaspartic are advanced coating materials that work best as durable topcoats. They provide excellent UV stability and surface protection, but they are not a substitute for moisture mitigation. That is why we build our systems with the proper foundation underneath.
Why are 1-day systems popular?
They are fast and convenient, but speed does not always equal durability. Proper prep work and moisture protection take time, and those steps are often what make the difference between a floor that lasts and one that fails early.
When can I walk on or drive on the floor?
Light foot traffic is usually okay after about 24 hours. Full cure is typically achieved within 48–72 hours, depending on the system and site conditions.
Can you work over existing concrete?
Yes, in most cases. As long as the slab is structurally sound, we can usually repair and coat existing concrete. If there are major issues, we will explain what can be improved and what limitations may remain.
Why does surface preparation matter so much?
Surface prep is one of the most important parts of the entire installation. The concrete must be properly ground and profiled so the coating can bond correctly. Without that, the risk of failure goes up significantly.
What causes peeling, bubbling, or delamination?
The most common causes are moisture vapor, improper surface preparation, contamination in the slab, or using the wrong system for the environment. Most failures can be avoided with the right prep and system design.
Warranties & Maintenance
How do I clean and maintain my floor?
Routine maintenance is simple. Sweep or blow out loose debris, then mop with warm water and a mild cleaner. At the end of the installation, we provide a cleaning kit along with a floor care sheet/PDF so you know exactly how to care for your new floor.
What does the warranty usually cover?
Qualifying warranties typically cover issues such as peeling, delamination, blistering, bubbling, yellowing, and moisture-related failure when moisture mitigation is included as part of the system. Our warranties are handled in-house, so if a covered issue comes up, you work directly with Primal Coatings.
Do you test for moisture?
Yes, when needed. Moisture is one of the biggest reasons coatings fail, so we take it seriously and recommend the proper system based on the condition of the slab.
What cleaners should I avoid?
Avoid harsh acids, abrasive pads, bleach-heavy products, and soap-heavy cleaners that leave residue behind. Using the wrong cleaner can dull the finish and attract more dirt over time.
How often might a topcoat or refresh be needed?
That depends on traffic, wear, maintenance, and exposure. Residential floors can often go many years before needing a refresh, while heavier-use commercial floors may benefit from maintenance sooner.
Residential Systems
Are the floors slippery?
Our floors offer excellent traction when dry. Like any sealed surface, they can become more slippery when wet, which is why we can incorporate Primal Grip in areas where added slip resistance is important.
Which system is best for a home garage?
For most homeowners, flake flooring is the best choice for a garage. It offers the best balance of durability, appearance, texture, and long-term performance.
What’s the difference between flake, metallic, quartz, and solid color?
Flake is the most popular and versatile option for garages and basements. Metallic creates a more decorative, high-end finish with movement and depth. Quartz is highly durable and more textured, making it ideal where added traction is needed. Solid color provides a clean, modern, uniform appearance.
Can I get metallic epoxy in my garage or basement?
Yes. Metallic is a great choice for garages, basements, and interior spaces when you want a more custom, decorative finish.
How does quartz flooring compare for residential use?
Quartz is more textured and performance-driven than many decorative systems. It is a strong option for patios, pool areas, and spaces where slip resistance matters.
What about grind and seal for a home garage or basement?
Grind and seal can be a good lower-cost option if you want a more natural concrete look. However, it does not offer the same build, appearance, or performance as a full coating system.
Do I need to wax or polish anything?
No. Coated floors do not require waxing. In most cases, regular sweeping and occasional mopping are all that is needed to keep them looking their best.
Commercial Systems
What’s the difference between grind and seal and polished concrete?
Grind and seal uses a topical sealer over mechanically prepared concrete. Polished concrete is refined through multiple grinding steps to create a smooth, durable finish with sheen built into the slab itself.
When should I choose urethane cement over epoxy?
Urethane cement is the better option for environments exposed to thermal shock, moisture, hot washdowns, heavy abuse, or demanding industrial use.
Can polished concrete handle heavy commercial foot traffic?
Yes. Properly installed polished concrete performs very well in high-traffic commercial environments and is a popular choice for retail, education, and showroom spaces.
How does urethane cement handle thermal shock?
Very well. Urethane cement is specifically known for performing in spaces exposed to sudden temperature swings, hot water, steam, and demanding operating conditions.
Is slip resistance available for commercial floors?
Yes. Slip-resistant texture can be added to many commercial systems, depending on the needs of the space and the level of traction required
What about downtime during commercial installation?
Downtime depends on the system, the size of the space, and site conditions. We always recommend the best installation schedule based on your operational needs and the performance requirements of the floor.
